Body mass index (BMI) is a measurement of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. It is used to determine whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. |
To calculate BMI, you divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. For example, if you weigh 70 kilograms and are 1.75 meters tall, your BMI would be 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9.
Here is a chart showing the categories for BMI based on the World Health Organization's guidelines:
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight: BMI of 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: BMI of 25 to 29.9
Obesity: BMI of 30 or higher
It's important to note that BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat. It does not take into account differences in muscle mass, bone density, and distribution of fat, and it may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. However, it is a useful tool for identifying trends in population studies and for determining whether an individual is at increased risk for certain health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
